Fantasy
The first of a two book series named The Sundering, Banewreaker is based on an extremely familiar plot. In this series, Jacqueline Carey takes the basic elements of the Lord of the Rings and changes them in subtle (and not so subtle) ways to create a new and original world where good and evil are not as clear cut as Tolkien would have us believe. Told from a mixture of perspectives, Banewreaker invokes compassion for characters such as Satoris and Tanaros, the equivalents of Sauron and the Witch King of the Nasgul. The plot quickly thickens as the story continues and every page leaves you yearning to read the next. I recommend this book to any fan of the Lord of the Rings who enjoys being submersed in worlds with no simple right and wrong; where villains are heroes and heroes are villains depending upon the perspective.
